FYI's History
The FYI Center of Milwaukee was incorporated in the State of Wisconsin in the spring of 2003. Its initiation realized the personal dream of a former foster child who had himself experienced a difficult transition to adulthood. As he matured he realized how much of that difficulty was because he lacked the independent living skills necessary cor his physical well being, nor did he have access to emotional support or educational and career guidance.
Mr. Pekrul, Founder and Executive Director of the Foster Youth Independence Center, influenced by his own personal and professional experiences, researched the literature and reviewed the work of service providers across the country. He then created a multi-modal social service program for aged out youth like himself.
In February 2004 the Foster Youth Independence Center was designated a not-for-profit corporation under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. In October 2004 the Center obtained an occupancy peromit as a social service facility. In December 2004, it moved to its first offices on Holton Street in Milwaukee River West district.
The FYI Center opened its doors for programs and services in January 2005. Having developed the necessary infrastructure, FYI Center began providing direct client services to emancipated youth, youth still in the foster care system and their respective families in July 2005.
Due to its succcess, the Center moved to its current, larger location at 604 E. Center Street, staying in Milwaukee's River West district. |
